A New Year’s Resolution That Makes a Difference

Happy New Year! As we head into 2026, many of us are busy scribbling down resolutions to better ourselves—eating healthier, moving more, or learning something new. But this year, we’re inviting you to make a resolution that benefits the whole of Hampshire.

The View from the Warehouse

As a wholesaler, we have a unique seat at the table. We see the early morning deliveries, the meticulous prep work, and the incredible passion that Hampshire’s chefs, baristas, and publicans pour into their businesses. We also see the quiet tables that January can bring.

The hospitality industry is the heartbeat of our local economy, from the bustling streets of Winchester to the coastal cafes of Southsea and the hidden gems in the New Forest. But after the tinsel comes down, these businesses face their toughest stretch of the year.

Why "Local" Matters More Than Ever

When you choose a Hampshire-owned pub or an independent café, your money does a lot more than buy a meal. It starts a "Local Loop":

  • Keeping it in the County: Research shows that for every £1 spent at a local independent business, around 63p stays in the local economy, compared to only 40p at larger chains. That money pays the wages of your neighbours and supports local Hampshire suppliers (like us!).

  • The Green Choice: Eating local is a resolution for the planet. By choosing a seasonal dish in a Hampshire bistro, you’re supporting a shorter supply chain with fewer "food miles," reducing the carbon footprint of your plate.

  • Social Value: Our local pubs and cafes are "social infrastructure." They return an estimated £8 in social value for every £1 invested by reducing loneliness and providing a safe space for the community.

The Cost of a "Closed" Sign

We’ve all seen the empty storefronts appearing on our high streets. In 2025, the UK lost an average of one pub every single day. With major business rates revaluations and tax changes looming this April, the "January Slump" is no longer just a quiet month—it’s a survival test.

Losing a venue has a domino effect:

  1. High Street Heartbeat: When a popular restaurant closes, footfall for nearby florists, boutiques, and butchers drops instantly.

  2. Loss of Identity: Our historic coaching inns and seaside cafes define Hampshire. Once they are gone, that local character is lost forever.

  3. The Jobs Gap: Hospitality is a vital entry point for young people. Every closure removes a "first step" on the career ladder for a local student.

Join "The January Promise"

We’re asking our community to join us in a simple, impactful challenge. The goal isn't to spend a fortune; it’s about consistency. Commit to supporting just ONE local hospitality business every week this month.

How you fulfil the promise is up to you:

  • The Monday Motivator: A morning coffee at your local coffee shop.

  • The Mid-Week Meetup: A cosy pub lunch to break up the winter gloom.

  • The Family Friday: A dinner at that family-run Italian or curry house you’ve loved for years.

  • The "Dry Jan" Social: A quick pint of 0% Beer or a craft mocktail in your local (it’s about the atmosphere, not just the ABV!).

  • The Weekend Treat: A sneaky pastry or sourdough loaf for a slow Sunday morning.

Support Doesn't Always Cost a Penny

We know January is a time for "tightening the belt." If you can’t make it out for a meal, you can still honour the promise:

  • Share the love: Tag them in a throwback photo of a great meal you had.

  • Leave a review: A 5-star Google review is a gift that keeps on giving.

  • Spread the word: Hit the share button on this post to remind others that our high streets need us.

Let’s ensure that when the Hampshire spring arrives,

Our favourite local spots are still there to welcome us.
